C Spire announces it's getting the Galaxy S III

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Samsung Galaxy S III
The march of the Galaxy S III continues, with regional carrier C Spire announcing that it plans to carry Samsung's latest. Pricing and availability will be relayed "in the coming weeks," said the carrier formerly known as Cellular South. The GSIII will be one of C Spire's first LTE-capable devices, and the 4G network is still slated to launch in 20 markets in Mississippi in September.
C Spire didn't specify whether it'll carry both the 16- and 32-gigabyte versions of the phone, but it did mention that "it comes" in marble white and pebble blue, which suggests it'll carry both colors.

Facebook's 'Close Friends' list will notify you of status updates, stalkers hitting 'Like'

Posted by Unknown

Facebook's 'Close Friends' list notifications make playing Big Brother that much
Late last month, Facebook started pushing harder for users to add people to their 'Close Friends' smart list, something intended to help Facebook figure out which people you want to see most in your News Feed (personally, we'd prefer Facebook stop trying to decide what it thinks will be important to us, but we're cranky like that). The push involved a big banner at the top of the desktop site that prompts users to "star" friends onto the Close Friends list, an initiative they've been slowly rolling out across their userbase. We'll admit to not using the desktop site all that often (or Facebook anywhere, for that matter), but just yesterday we hopped onto Facebook, got the prompt, thought "why not?", starred a few friends and family, and called it a day. That is, until later that night when we started getting notifications for mundane status updates that had nothing to do with interactions with ourselves. "Mary Jane uploaded a photo", "Joe Schmoe update his status: "Tacos!" ", "Pat Chris checked in at Pete's Eats", and the like. It was confusing at first, until we realized that Facebook was serving us status updates for people we'd starred onto the Close Friends list .Without having received any updates in several months, we're impressed that the webOS apps (both smartphone and tablet) handled the new us-free notifications without skipping a beat, including proper links to the friends and their posts (and any links within said post) with nary an issue. We're also somewhat amused by the in-your-face-ness of the updates, as it'll certainly make stalking keeping tabs on your friends easier, and yet possibly more annoying. We like our friends and all, but we're not sure we want everything they've done popping up on our phones as it happens all the freaking time. We're close, but we're not that close.Thankfully, you can kill the notifications, but you have to go to Facebook's desktop site to do it. Load up you Close Friends list (it'll be on the left, possibly hidden under the More link), click on Notifications in the top right, and select Off. Alternatively you can click on the Manage List button just to the right of that, select Choose Update Types, and filter out the Likes and Game posts you don't want or need to see

Samsung Galaxy S III will use a different MHL to HDMI adapter

Posted by Unknown

    GS III
If you're planning on purchasing a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S III, and have an existing Android phone that uses a MHL to HDMI adapter for video out, you'll be needing to replace that adapter. According to Samsung the hardware differences -- the Galaxy S III uses a different pin layout than previous phones did -- make the old adapters incompatible with the phone.
While it's a bit inconvenient, it's almost to be expected. There's even more stuff crammed inside a thinner phone, so hardware has been redesigned and things that plug in need redesigned, too. It's probably not a conspiracy to force everyone to buy a new adapter (most of us probably will never use one anyway), and the parts themselves retail for about $25 bucks for a Samsung branded OEM model.
If you're in the UK or Europe, you can grab one at Clove (£20.82-- check out the video after the break), and we're pretty sure you'll be able to find them at your carriers store here in the US when the SGS3 launches. Just don't try your old one -- you don't want to be the guy who finds out what happens when you plug it in and turn it on!

Incase Origami Workstation + Apple Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad review

Incase's Origami Workstation presupposes you either already have an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard or like the Apple keyboard so much you want to use it with your iPad, and does its best to meld it together with your iPad. Apple Store employees check out Microsoft Store opening in Freehold, NJ

    WP Central
Today, Microsoft threw the doors open to their Freehold, NJ store marking yet another feather in the growing chain's cap. While we're always excited to see another Store open up, especially on the East coast, what makes this opening just a tad hilarious is the curious Apple employees who evidently showed up.As it is well known, Microsoft has been opening their stores wherever Apple has theirs (including our own location) and perhaps setting up for some interesting drama. In this case, reader Trav sent us the above photo of the brave Apple employees who were checking the competition.Hey, we don't begrudge Apple and we more than welcome them to the fold even if for just a visit. Thanks, Trav, for the tip

Show your loved one you care with Thinking of You messaging for Windows Phone

    Thinking of You
For all of those with a significant other and two Windows Phones, you'll want to check out Thinking of You by Quinn Damerell. Damerell is also the developer of the super popular Reddit app, Baconit, which just received a fantastic update.Thinking of You is a secure personal messaging app the allows you keep in contact with your latest beau. The service which is free, works by connecting two Windows Phones via a personalized PIN. The service then pushes messages between two devices by connecting to a server for Toast and Push notifications. It's cute, quaint, secure and free. The service doesn't maintain the messages on the server and get this, if you "break the connection" i.e. you get dumped, the app will automatically erase the messages on both devices. That's good news for those worried about their SMS messages coming back to haunt them later.
    Thinking of You
The app is fairly limited with just text being able to be sent (no photos, no location information) and you can only have one-secure connection at a time (sorry, swingers). It works well and there's even a prefab "Thinking of you!" message to quickly send to your loved one without all that effort making is a niche but well-done app.If you have an SO that you want to use the app, just send 'em here to the Windows Phone Marketplace or the app's homepage for more info. Thinking of You is free and ad-free.

Andy Rubin, rumor smasher: Not leaving Google; 900,000+ Android activations daily

Posted by Unknown

    Android
Gotta love a good unfounded rumor on a slow Sunday afternoon. Or not.
Regardless, Robert Scoble this afternoon set up a trial balloon to see what folks though about the possibility of Andy Rubin possibly leaving Google for a startup called CloudCar. Wrote Scoble on Google+
Today I heard that the head of Android, +Andy Rubin, will soon leave Google and head to a new startup called http://www.cloudcar.com/
Now, that rumor has two purposes: one, it might be true, in which case I start thinking about what that means for Android. I certainly will be looking for those signs when I attend the Google IO conference.
it didn't take long for Rubin to set the record straight, responding on Google+
How a rumor gets factualized: Cloudcar are a group of friends who I give free office space to in my incubator in Los Altos.  Revel Touch (Mar Hershenson's company: www.reveltouch.com) is another cool company that shares this space.  I'm not joining either one and I don't have any plans to leave Google.  See you on the 27th!
    Roger that. Over and out.
So in more Earth-based news, Rubin has also stated that there are over 900,000 Android activations daily -- up from 850,000 just a couple months ago at MWC. Before we delve into just how big that number is, let's revisit what each of those activations are. When a new Android device with a cellular radio has a Google account signed into it, it's counted as an activation. Each device only gets counted once -- not when you flash a new ROM, or when you sell it, just the first time the device is registered. This means that over 900,000 people are buying new Android devices every day. Or 27,000,000 every month. Or 328,500,000 a year at that rate. That's a lot of Android.
Looks like we'll be seeing plenty of Andy Rubin, and plenty of Android activations for the time being.

eBay app buggy? Auction bids entered way too high?

    eBay App for Windows Phone
The official eBay app for Windows Phone has been out for some time and while the Marketplace reviews aren't stellar, they don't really call for you to run for the hills either. Yet we received a tip from a German reader that there could be a potentially disastrous bug in the app.It appears that while bidding on a Nokia Lumia 800 a bid was entered as 211.69€ and appeared that way in the confirmation screen. However, when the bid was submitted it registered as 21169.00€. Luckily the ending bid didn't make it that far, ending at 270 Euros.According to the tipster, eBay Germany was contacted and recommended contacting the seller to request a cancelation. While we first thought this could easily be pilot error, in scanning through the Marketplace reviews on the eBay app (found here at the Windows Phone Marketplace), other Windows Phone users report similar instances where the confirmed bid is higher than the submitted bid.We aren't sure if this is a wide spread issue and hopefully if this is a bug, the quirk can be resolved easily with an update to the app. Still, bug or not, you might want to be extra careful to review your eBay bids when submitting via the Windows Phone app. If my recollection of eBay is correct, an incorrectly submitted bid can be canceled before the auction closes. Thanks, aerone, for the tip!

Sony trades Facebook likes for early Xperia announcement

Posted by Unknown

    Sony
Sony's got a new Xperia smartphone on the horizon, and it's willing to bring its announcement date forward in exchange for a few "likes" on Facebook. At present, all will be revealed next Thursday, June 21, but the company's calling on fans to press a "fast forward" button to bring the announcement forward (naturally, liking the promotion or sharing with friends will also speed things up.) There's also the chance to win the mysterious device, if you're up for clicking a few more buttons and entering your email address.Given the level of buzz Sony is looking to create, we see only one likely candidate for the "next Xperia," as it's being called -- an international version of the Xperia GX, perhaps under a different name.  A new flagship product, the GX is currently slated to arrive in Japan next month, so an international variant would be expected to follow. It'd also back up reports of a device codenamed "LT29i" or "Hayabusa," which reportedly features a spec list identical to the GX. According to a Sony roadmap which leaked earlier in the year, the Hayabusa was targeted for a July launch, which would fit perfectly with the announcement window. We'll keep you posted whenever Sony announces its next big thing. Hit the source link if you want to press buttons and move forward a giant animated clock.

Look for SmartGlass support in all future Microsoft Studio games

Microsoft's SmartGlass took center stage at E3 2012 and was rather impressive. SmartGlass aims to bridge entertainment and productivity from the Xbox console to computers, tablets and smartphones. A connection that will go beyond simply pausing a video on your Xbox console and picking it up on your Windows Phone. While we aren't sure how far reaching SmartGlass will be with developers, according to Phil Spencer, Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, we should expect SmartGlass support to be a constant feature in all of Microsoft Studios games going forward.
"It just makes so much sense for a developer who wants to supply, maybe not time-critical information, like 'that enemy is getting ready to shoot you,' but information that augments what's happening on screen." "...you're even going to see situations like with Ascend, where there's actually gameplay that happens on the phone, even when you're away from your television and that interacts back with the online game that's happening."
We may see supplemental information appear on your Windows Phone while playing a game on the Xbox console or the game completely transfer to your Windows Phone when you walk away from the console. SmartGlass has the potential to seamlessly connect the three screens. Or is it four screens with tablets on the horizon?Source: joystiq
